HOMEWORK POLICY
Most of your child’s academic learning will take place INSIDE the classroom. This means there will not be very much assigned homework. There is a growing body of educational research that shows homework isn't really that helpful in elementary school. The only things I'll ask them to do at home are things they can't really do here. Things like interviewing a family member or counting the number of invisible forces they can find in your homes.
Your kids work hard (really hard!!) while there are at school. When they go home there is still much to learn - from you. Spend time together talking about your family, enjoy stress-free sports, play with friends, cook together, talk together. Eat a healthy dinner and get to bed early so they can be recharged and ready to start school over the next day. If you see something come home that they didn't finish at school it is because they chose to use their in-class time for something not school related (like talking :). Please ask them to work on any unfinished work and return to school as soon as they are able to. I accept all late work up until grading day.
My only expectation is that they read as often as they can when they are not at school. This year the students will have an opportunity to check out a “Good Fit” reading book from my classroom or the school library. They should read for as long as they find it interesting or helpful. Some 7/8 year olds can read for 30 minutes a night, others only 5-10. Their goal should be to increase their stamina, not to sit and stare at a book until a timer dings. An even better idea would be to have them read to YOU a little bit every night...
